This research provides a snapshot of the history of German migration to Australia, focusing on the extent to which migrants remain connected to the German language as a means of asserting their German identity.

January 28th marked the 70th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Commonwealth of Australia in 1952. But German-Australian ties are of course much older, dating back to the early 19th century when the first German settlers arrived on Australian shores.
